Some Words of Advice About Life

As you may know, it was my birthday last Friday. I want to share with you, dear reader, some things I learned in the past year. I’ve been through a lot, and yet, here I am! Typing this for you, very much alive. I’ve survived.

Things will change. People will change. And you will have to move on.

This is probably one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in the past year. At the beginning of the last school year, my best friend left me. It just about killed me. But I got back up and joined a small group of friends, and soon after met a great friend. Unfortunately, the same thing happened this year. But again, I got up and found another great person to be friends with. And…

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.” -Helen Keller

This has to do with the above lesson, but when my friendships ended, I was so sad. I kept staring at the closed door and attempting to open it, even though it was pretty stuck. So I saw another one and walked through. And guess what? It worked out. :) So just remember to look for new opportunities and friendships.

Be yourself. Laugh loudly. Scream at inopportune times. Do what you want to.

This is so cliché, but so very true. Don’t cover up who you are or be fake. Even if you’re embarrassed, keep on going. You are you, not anyone else. And be proud, too! I still need to work on this. Sometimes I won’t like my laugh or compare myself to others who are very different than me. I check others around me before laughing in class and am very self-conscious. But don’t do what I do!

Don’t judge yourself on whether others have crushes on you or not.

I remember the first dance I went to last year. All my friends got asked to dance except for me. I was absolutely heartbroken. Reflecting on that, however, I realize now that it doesn’t matter. It matters what your friends think of you and how you think of yourself.

So that’s it!

The Battle of Writing

Writing is something I love to do. But it’s also hard and boring and painful and…well, you get the point.

Writing is a journey, but it’s also a battle. A battle of words. And it’s not easy to win. I battle words whenever I write Nakoma.

I think writing is perceived as being easy; when you read a book, you think, I could totally write something like this! unless you’re a writer, that is. In reality it’s one word, then another, and another, until you reach the end.

So, write on.
